Biography & contributions

Robert Banks was born on November 24, 1921 - died on January 03,1989.Robert was the coinventor of crystalline polypropylene and high density polyethylene. Robert won the Perkin medal in the year of 2001 for invention of two types of plastics.

Facts about polypropylene

Polypropylene is a plastic polymer which is used in many different settings, consumer goods and fiber products.Polypropylene is one of those most versatile polymers available with applications, both as a plastic and as a fibre, in virtually all of the plastics end-use markets. Polypropylene is having important propertie slike semi-rigid, tranlucent, chemical resistance, tough, heat resistance.Production of polypropylene takes palce by slurry, solution or gas phase process.During the production process monomers like propylene is subjected to heat and pressure in the presence of a catalyst system.

The propylene monomers undergo polymerization at relatively temperature and pressures resulting the translucent product.Polypropylene is being recycled in many applications, including battery cases, paint cans, home storage, flower pots, pallets, crates, composite lumber, and more.In terms of energy efficiency, polypropylene is comparable in gross energy to produce to many other plastics used for packaging.Polypropylene produces less solid waste by weight than PET, PS or PVC.

Polypropylene can also be made into disposable bottles to contain liquid, powdered, or similar consumer products.Polypropylene is widely used in ropes, distinctive because they are light enough to float in water.Polypropylene is also used as an alternative to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as insulation for electrical cables for LSZH cable in low-ventilation environments, primarily tunnels.Polypropylene is most commonly used for plastic moldings.Polypropylene is also used in warm-weather clothing.

Facts about high density polyethylene

High density polyethylene [HDPE] is one of the most widely and commonly used plastic ingredient. HDPE is typically found in milk jugs, plastic bags and refillable plastic bottles, garden products, buckets, crates and office products.

HDPE has been used in recent years for garden furniture and recycling bins as it resists the weather and can be cleaned very easily. It is lightweight which means bins made from this material can be handled and transported very easily. It is an ideal material for the injection moulding process making it suitable for batch and continuous production.
