Global warming

Global warming, also known as climate change, is the phenomenon involving rise in the average earth’s temperature observed over the century. Global warming is responsible for many climatic and atmospheric changes experienced by the earth today. Around the world, there has been increase in average temperatures by 0.75 degree Celsius over the past 100 years.

Global Warming Causes

Earth is experiencing continual rise in the average temperatures. The main cause of global warming is the rise of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human activities like fossil fuels burning and deforestation.

Greenhouse gases:

Greenhouse effect is the process through which infrared radiations are absorbed and emitted by gases in the atmosphere of the planet, warming atmosphere and surface. In simple words, greenhouse effects rises the earths’ temperature by trapping the heat in the atmosphere.

Greenhouse gases are the gases that contribute towards the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases acts as the mirror in the atmosphere, which reflects back heat energy to the earth, which otherwise would have been lost in the space.

The main gases under Greenhouse gases are:

Carbon Dioxide:

Carbon dioxide contributes about 9-26% to the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide (C02) is a composition of two atoms of oxygen and one atom of carbon. It is naturally present in the atmosphere, biosphere and oceans.

It participates in the balance of biogeochemical cycle in pertinent concentrations and manages greenhouse effects, but rises greenhouse effects when exceeds the level.

New sources of CO2 are being generated by humans through combustion of fossil fuels and deforestation.


Methane causes 4-9% of the greenhouse effects. Methane is alkane hydrocarbon gas which occurs naturally in lakes and swamps. It is a flammable gas which is also the cause for ozone destruction.

Water Vapour:

Water vapour is the greenhouse gas that causes 36-70% of the greenhouse effect. It is a natural gas present in the air, which is obtained by evaporation of liquid water and also by sublimation of the ice. It absorbs infrared radiations.

Carbon Monoxide:

This gas is discharged during organic matter decomposition and when there is incomplete hydrocarbons decomposition.

Nitrogen Oxides:

Nitrogen oxides are various gaseous chemical compounds which are formed by combining nitrogen and oxygen. It intervenes in the process of acid rains, smog formation and ozone destruction.


Ozone causes 3-7% of the greenhouse effects. Ozone is a layer that prevents solar radiation to pass directly into the earth’s surface and it constitutes three atoms of oxygen.

Global Warming Effects

  • Desertification: It is increase of temperature around the world in the atmosphere. This is resulting in water shortage and extreme weather conditions.

  • Rising melting of ice and snow: Snow and ice are melting at much higher pace than before

  • Sea level rise: Sea level are accelerating, since 1880, the sea level has got risen by around 25cm. Global warming is contributing to this by two ways: oceans water expanding because of warmer average temperatures and due to melting of ice and glaciers acceleration.
