Organic reactions are reaction connecting with the organic chemical compounds. There are different types of organic chemical reactions. Organic reactions can be categorised based on the type of functional group involved in the reaction as a reactant and functional group that is formed as a result of the reaction.

Classification of chemical reactions in organic chemistry

Oxidation reaction

In this type of chemical reaction, oxidation takes place when oxygen atoms are added or when the electrons are lost. This kind of reaction generally occurs when the distinct life processes which are photosynthesis,combustion, respiration, rusting, etc. The reaction where magnesium metal reacts with oxygen forming magnesium oxide which is an oxidation reaction.

Reduction reaction

Reduction reaction happens when the gain of electrons or losing of oxygen atoms in a chemical reaction. Generally, the reduction in the oxidation number of an organic compound is referred to as Reduction process. The reaction involving magnesium oxide and carbon in the process of reduction.

Hydrolysis reaction

Hydrolysis reaction is a type of reaction when the polymers are broken down into the monomers when water is added. Usually, the phrase hydrolysis is meant by the reaction of an element with water. The standard case for Hydrolysis reaction is the reaction of salts of a weaker base or a weaker acid with water. At this point water gets decayed to hydroxyl and hydrogen ions. Another similar example is the hydrolysis of an ester.

The subsequent reaction of the method is:

CH3COOCH3 + H2O = CH3COOH   + CH3OH

Condensation reaction

A Condensation reaction is a procedure that yields two compounds water and as ammonia. In usual terms, the reaction that generated acid anhydrides is referred to as the condensation reaction. For instance, acetic acid reacts with water producing an acid anhydride.

Polymerization reaction

A polymerization reaction is a method that absorb when the combination of two or more pure monomers producing large polymers. The procedure is known as Polymerization. There are various kinds of polymerization reactions specifically chain-reaction and step-reaction.

Substitution reaction

This kind of reaction is also known as single displacement or replacement reaction. This reaction takes place in a reaction where a one atom or a collection of atoms or molecules are reinstated by a different group of atoms or molecules.

Combination reaction

Combination reaction takes place when two or more elements are combined to form a single compound or an element or a product. These reactions can be represented in the form of

X + Y = XY

Addition reaction

During addition reactions, two or more molecules combine to form a large single molecule. This sort of reaction takes place merely within two chemical compounds that contain multiple bonds. It is contradictory reaction to that of the elimination reaction in organic chemistry.

Decomposition reaction

The decomposition reaction is a transpose reaction to that of the combination reaction. In this reaction is a process where a single chemical compound decomposes into two distinct products.

Combustion reaction

Combustion reactions are reactions that produce heat and light. The similar name for burning is nothing but Combustion. In this kind of reaction, the chemical element is burnt in the occurrence of oxygen producing carbon-dioxide and water as the resultant.
