Defoamers are chemical additive used to lessen or prevent the formation of the foam in industrial-process liquids. Defoamers are insoluble in the foaming channel and posses surface active characters. A vital characteristic of a defoamer product is a low thickness and an ability to spread quickly on foamy surfaces.

Defoamers has several applications such as antifoams are added to certain detergents to reduce foaming that may decrease the action of the detergents Defoamers are also used as an ingredient in the food. Antifoaming agents or defoamers are used as an active ingredient in the pharmaceutical industry such as in drug Simethicone.


Classifications of Defoamers

1. Oil-based agents for paints


Oil-based defoamers have a property of oil carrier. The oil may be mineral, vegetable, white oil or any other type of oil that is insoluble in the foaming medium, except silicone oil. An oil-based anti-settling agent also encloses a wax or hydrophobic silica to enhance the performance. Various types of waxes are ethylene bis stearamide (EBS), paraffin waxes, ester waxes and fatty alcohol waxes. These types can also have surfactants for better emulsification and scattering in the foaming medium.


2. Powder defoamer


Powder antifoaming agents are in principle oil based defoamers on a particular carrier like silica. These are supplemented to powdered commodities like cement, plaster and detergents.


3. Water based agents


Water based defoamers are unlike types of oils and waxes spread in a water base. The oils are frequently mineral, vegetable oil and the waxes are long chain fatty alcohol, fatty acid soaps or esters. These are usually good as deaerators which are best at discharging entrained air.


4. Silicon based agents


These agents are polymers with silicon backbones. These may be carried as oil or a water based mixture. The silicone composite consists of hydrophobic silica disseminated in silicone oil. Emulsifiers are supplemented to ensure that the silicone scatters rapidly and well in the foaming. The silicone composite may also consist of silicone glycols and also modified silicone fluids.


5. EO/PO agents


An EO/PO agent consists of polyethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol copolymers. They are carried as oils, water solutions or water based emulsions. EO/PO copolymers usually have superior dispersing properties and are frequently well suited when deposit problems are any matter.


6. Alkyl polyacrylates


Alkyl polyacrylates are appropriate for the usage as defoamers in non-aqueous systems where air discharges is more significant than the fall down of surface foam. These defoamers are often set free in a solvent carrier like petroleum distillates.
