Problems Arising from Foam in Paints, Coatings and Inks

Foam is an undesirable object formed during the production of paints, coatings and inks. This anomaly can cause major surface defects during application. Foaming can occur during the production process, where it leads to the wastage of space in the production vessels. Foaming not only effects efficiency, but also effects the quality and protection functionality of paints and coatings.


Factors Affecting Foam Formation      

Almost all elements present in paints, coatings and inks can influence the behavior of foam, either positively or negatively. Apart from this, the type of substrate and the method of application can have an impact as well. The situation governs the removal of foam and usually coatings cannot be defoamed. For example, a specific spray application could result in exceptional film properties, however, the use of the same paint in a curtain coater operation could lead to foaming issues.

Considering the high possibility for the presence of potential foam stabilizing substances in paints, coatings and inks systems, antifoaming agents or defoamers are used to avoid foam formation or eliminate foam that has been already formed. Thereby, defoamers play an important role in al almost all formulations. 


What is a Defoamer? What do they do?

Defoamer is an additive used to remove foam in paints, coatings and inks during their application and ensure that they are free from defects. However, they are known to cause defects in coatings such as fisheyes, cratering, popping and depressions. Therefore, it is imperative for antifoams to remove both the defects while offering antifoaming properties to paints and coatings.


Foam Control Solutions for Paints, Coatings and Inks

It is non-corrosive and effective over a wide pH range with effective knockdown properties. It also finds applications as a mold release agent and finishing chemical in the rubber industry. TRIOBAN PC NXZ is very effective in removing entrapped air in building products such as mortars, adhesives and plasters, when the air content must be minimized.  


TRIOBAN PC 1070 is a silicone free liquid defoamer for waterborne applications. This defoamer is used for architectural coatings, high gloss paints and car polish finishing chemicals. TRIOBAN PC 1070 is an economical antifoam, which is effective in alkaline as well as acid systems. It provides long term effectiveness in water and excellent stability. This defoamer is economical in use and generally, 0.2% to 0.5% usage is based on total system.


TRIOBAN AW 642 LV is defoamer that can instantly disperse in water, which can be at any phase of a compounded formulation. This antifoaming agent gives significant freedom from defects like surface imperfection and fisheyes during formation of film. It also facilitates quick breaking of bubbles in roll outs or brushing without causing surface defects. TRIOBAN AW 642 LV is an anti-webbing agent for which 0.1%-0.3% will be adequate. It is effective in both acidic and alkaline systems.


TRIOBAN PC 2151 is designed particularly for water-based systems. This hydrocarbon oil-based antifoam agent is highly effective in the presence of various surfactants and is unaffected by extreme temperatures and varying pH. TRIOBAN PC 2151 is capable of controlling foaming during processes such as manufacturing, application and packing of paints, coatings and inks.


TRIOBAN PC NSDL is defoamer, which is a blend of mineral oil and fatty acid esters. It provides instant foam knockdown, which is dispersible in water to give out emulsion of moderate stability. This antifoam has long lasting efficiency and is suitable for all common emulsion systems. TRIOBAN PC NSDL controls aeration and foaming during paint manufacture, filling and application. This defoamer finds applications in adhesives, architectural coatings, plaster, polymeric dispersions and UV printing inks. This antifoam is effective over a wide range of pH.


TRIOBAN IC NIK is an extremely versatile defoamer that has negligible effect on gloss. It combines rapid elimination of foam with long lasting efficiency. This antifoaming agent is effective over a wide pH range. TRIOBAN IC NIK is ideally used in the proportions of 0.1% to 0.5% for most surface coatings. It is a blend of mineral oil with fatty acid esters along with hydrophobic particles.


TRIOBAN PC SDXL is a water based stabilized emulsion of mineral oil with fatty acid esters that finds applications in paints, coatings, adhesives and admixtures. This defoamer offers good knock down property, long term efficiency and is very effective at low dosage. It is stable under extreme pH conditions and 0.1% to 0.5 % usage will be adequate.


TRIOBAN PC DKW is a blend of hydrocarbons and fatty acid esters. This defoamer combines rapid break down of foam with long lasting effect. It is unaffected by extremes of pressure and temperature. This antifoam is effective both in alkaline and acidic media. Around 0.1% to 0.5% usage will provide good foam control. It finds applications in paints based on styrene butadiene acrylic, vinylidine chloride, EVA (ethylene vinly acetate), water soluble alkyds, PVC and its copolymers.


TRIOBAN PC 722 is an organo modified siloxane, hydrophobe, polyether silicone, surfactant, which is an economical defoamer for paints, coatings and inks. These silicone defoamers are suited for higher quality coating formulations. They can also be combined with hydrophobic solids to increase the defoaming effect. This antifoam does not affect the color paste acceptance while using color pastes and does not affect gloss in high-gloss systems.
