Asparagine

Asparagine is one of the 20 most common natural amino acids. It has carboxamide as the side-chain's functional group. It is the amide of aspartic acid. It is not an essential amino acid. Its codons are AAU and AAC. Asparagine was first isolated in 1806, under a crystalline form, by French chemists Louis Nicolas Vauquelin and Pierre Jean Robiquet (then a young assistant) from asparagus juice. Asparagine has a high propensity to hydrogen bond, since the amide group can accept two and donate two hydrogen bonds. It is found on the surface as well as buried within proteins. Asparagine serves as an amino donor in liver transamination processes. It also participates in metabolic control of the brain and nervous system having some therapeutic uses. In the central nervous system, asparagine is needed to maintain a balance, preventing over nervousness or being overly calm.
