Oxyfluorfen is a selective pre and postemergent herbicide used to control certain annual broadleaf and grassy weeds in vegetables, fruit, cotton, es] ornamentals and on non-crop areas. It is a contact herbicide and light is required for it to affect target plants. It is available in emulsifiable concentrate and granular formulations.Oxyfluorfen is a moderately toxic by ingestion and slightly toxic by dermal absorption.Oxyfluorfen has a strong tendency to adsorb to soil particles and is nearly insoluble in water. Once oxyfluorfen is adsorbed to soil particles, it is not readily removed. It is therefore unlikely to leach downward or to contaminate groundwater. In aged sandy loam, 82% of applied oxyfluorfen remained in the top 2 inches of soil. Oxyfluorfen did not leach below 4 inches in any soil except sand. In water, oxyfluorfen is rapidly decomposed by light. Because oxyfluorfen is nearly insoluble in water and has a tendency to adsorb to soil, it is unlikely to remain in water. It will instead adsorb to suspended particles or sediments.Oxyfluorfen is a white to orange or red-brown crystalline solid with a smoke-like odor. It may decompose if exposed to UV light.Oxyfluorfen is stable under normal temperatures and pressures, but poses a slight fire hazard if exposed to heat or flame, and a fire and explosion hazard in the presence of strong oxidizers. Paraquat is classified as a viologen, a family of redox-active heterocycles of similar structure. This salt is one of the most widely used herbicides. It is quick-acting and non-selective, killing green plant tissue on contact. It is also toxic to human beings and animals. It is linked to development of Parkinson's disease. The name is derived from the para positions of the quaternary nitrogens. Paraquat is classified as non-selective contact herbicide. Paraquat kills a wide range of annual grasses and broad-leaved weeds and the tips of established perennial weeds. Paraquat is an oxidant that interferes with electron transfer, a process that is common to all life. Paraquat is often used in science to catalyze the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), more specifically, the superoxide free radical. Paraquat will undergo redox cycling in vivo, being reduced by an electron donor such as NADPH, before being oxidized by an electron receptor such as dioxygen to produce superoxide, a major ROS. Paraquat is used to control broad-leaved weeds and grasses, being less effective on deep rooted plants such as dandelions. It does not harm mature bark, and is thus widely used for weed control in fruit orchards and plantation crops, including coffee, cocoa, coconut, oil palms, rubber, bananas, vines, olives and tea, ornamental trees and shrubs and in forestry.
