Hexafluoroisopropanol

Hexafluoroisopropanol is an organic compound. This fluorinated alcohol finds use as solvent and synthetic intermediate. As a solvent hexafluoroisopropanol is polar and exhibits strong hydrogen bonding properties enabling it to dissolve substances that serve as hydrogen-bond acceptors, such as amides and ethers. It is a speciality solvent for some polar polymers and organic synthesis. It is especially effective for solubilizing a wide range of polymers, including those that are not soluble in the most common organic solvents: such as polyamides, polyacrylonitriles, polyacetals, polyesters, and polyketones. It has also found use in biochemistry to solubilize peptides and to monomerize β-sheet protein aggregates. Because of its acidity, it can be used as acid in volatile buffers for ion pair HPLC - mass spectrometry of nucleic acids. It is the precursor to the inhalation anesthetic sevoflurane.

Hexane

Hexane is a hydrocarbon, that is, an alkane with six carbon atoms. Hexanes are significant constituents of gasoline. They are widely used as cheap, relatively safe, largely unreactive, and easily evaporated non-polar solvents. In industry, hexanes are used in the formulation of glues for shoes, leather products, and roofing. They are also used to extract cooking oils from seeds, for cleansing and degreasing all sorts of items, and in textile manufacturing. A typical laboratory use of hexanes is to extract oil and grease contaminants from water and soil for analysis. Since hexane cannot be easily deprotonated, it is used in the laboratory for reactions that involve very strong bases, such as the preparation of Grignard reagents.

Hexanoic Acid

Hexanoic acid is the carboxylic acid derived from hexane. It is a fatty acid found naturally in various animal fats and oils, and is one of the chemicals that gives the decomposing fleshy seed coat of the ginkgo. It is used in organic synthesis, manufacture of perfume, medicine, lubricating grease, rubber and dye.
