Technetium

Technetium is the lowest atomic number element without any stable isotopes; every form of it is radioactive. Nearly all technetium is produced synthetically and only minute amounts are found in nature. Its short-lived gamma ray-emitting nuclear isomer—technetium-99m—is used in nuclear medicine for a wide variety of diagnostic tests. Technetium-99 is used as a gamma ray-free source of beta particles. Long-lived technetium isotopes produced commercially are by-products of fission of uranium-235 in nuclear reactors and are extracted from nuclear fuel rods.

Tellurium

Tellurium is a metalloid which looks similar to tin. It is chemically related to selenium and sulfur. It was discovered in Transylvania in 1782 by Franz-Joseph Müller von Reichenstein in a mineral containing gold and tellurium. Martin Heinrich Klaproth named the new element in 1798 after the Latin word for "earth", tellus. It is primarily used in alloys, foremost in steel and copper to improve machinability. Applications in solar panels and as a semiconductor material also consume a considerable fraction of tellurium production. It is also used to color ceramics. The strong increase in optical refraction upon the addition of selenides and tellurides into glass is used in the production of glass fibers for telecommunications. These chalcogenide glasses are widely used. Rubber can be vulcanized with tellurium instead of sulfur or selenium. The rubber produced in this way shows improved heat resistance.

Terbium

Terbium is a rare earth metal that is malleable,ductile and soft enough to be cut with a knife. It is never found in nature as a free element, but it is contained in many minerals, including cerite, gadolinite, monazite, xenotime and euxenite. It is used to dope calcium fluoride, calcium tungstate and strontium molybdate, materials that are used in solid-state devices, and as a crystal stabilizer of fuel cells which operate at elevated temperatures. It is also used in alloys and in the production of electronic devices. As a component of Terfenol-D, terbium is of use in actuators, in naval sonar systems and in sensors. Terbium oxide is used in green phosphors in fluorescent lamps and color TV tubes.

Terbium metal is silver gray metal, which is a kind of rare earth metal. There are two production method, distillation and reduction. Distilled terbium is dendritic with metal luster. Reduced terbium is dark gray without metal luster. Distillation method get higher purity than reduction method. Distilled terbium metal apply to make high-temperature fuel cell and laser material. Calcium fluoride, calcium tungstate, strontium molybdate doped with terbium can apply to make solid state device.

Terbium magneto-optic material has bulk production, which is a kind of magneto-optic storage material. Magneto-optic disc of Tb-Fe non-crystal film can be as computer memory element, which increase storage by 10-15times.

Faraday rotatory glass containing terbium is key material in processing rotator, isolator and circulator that widely used in laser technology. Especially TerFenol. Terfenol is new material that found in 70s. Half of the alloy are terbium and dysprosium. Sometime adding holmium. The balance is iron. Tb-Dy-Ir mainly apply to sonar initially, but now it gets more and more applications as fuel injection system, liquid valve control, wing adjuster, special loudspeaker and so on.

Applications

Terbium(III, IV) oxide is additive for yttrium iron garnet and yttrium aluminium garnet. It is raw material for production of terbium metal. It also acts as activator of fluorescent powder, which is fluorophor of X-ray intensifying screen. Tb4O7 is additive for magnetic material and fluorescent powder too.
