Guaiacol is a naturally occurring organic compound. Although it is biosynthesized by a variety of organisms, this colorless aromatic oil is usually derived from guaiacum or wood creosote. It is present in wood smoke, resulting from the pyrolysis of lignin. Guaiacol is a precursor to various flavorants such as eugenol and vanillin. Its derivatives are used medicinally as an expectorant, antiseptic, and local anesthetic. It also can be used as a dye in chemical reactions as oxygen will turn guaiacol from colorless to brown.
Iodoform is the organoiodine compound with the formula CHI3. A pale yellow, crystalline, volatile substance, it has a penetrating odor and, analogous to chloroform, sweetish taste. It is occasionally used as a disinfectant. It is sometimes also referred to as carbon triiodide or methyl triiodide.

Pyridine is a basic heterocyclic organic compound. It was discovered in 1849 by the Scottish chemist Thomas Anderson as one of the constituents of bone oil. Two years later, Anderson isolated pure pyridine through fractional distillation of the oil. It is used as a precursor to agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals and is also an important solvent and reagent. Pyridine is added to ethanol to make it unsuitable for drinking. Selenium is a nonmetal, chemically related to sulfur and tellurium, and rarely occurs in its elemental state in nature. It conducts electricity better in the light than in the dark, and is used in photocells. It is found in economic quantities in sulfide ores such as pyrite, partially replacing the sulfur in the ore matrix. The chief commercial uses for selenium today are in glass making and in chemicals and pigments. Uses in electronics, once important, have been supplanted by silicon semiconductor devices. It is used widely in vitamin preparations and other dietary supplements, in small doses. Some livestock feeds are fortified with selenium as well. It is used in the toning of photographic prints. Selenium is a catalyst in many chemical reactions and is widely used in various industrial and laboratory syntheses, especially organoselenium chemistry. It is also widely used in structure determination of proteins and nucleic acids by X-ray crystallography.
m-Cresol is a phenol. Amongst its uses it can be used as a solvent for dissolving polymers, most notably the conducting polymer polyaniline. When polyaniline is cast from a solution of m-cresol or a polyaniline film is exposed to m-cresol vapor the conductivity is higher than a polyaniline film cast without the presence of m-cresol.
o-Xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon, based on benzene with two methyl substituent bonded to adjacent carbon atoms in the aromatic ring.
