What are the photographic chemicals?

Another weakness of developing agents is they break down when exposed to oxygen. To prevent oxidation a preservative mostly sodium sulfite is added to developer solutions.


The third weakness of developing agents is that they don’t know when to stop. To prevent developmental fog or chemical fog a restrainer most often potassium bromide is used in the developer solution.

Stop Bath

When development is perfect, it must be stopped, to do this stop baths agents are used. A stop bath should be acidic, as the developers are basic. Most stop baths contain solvent like water and little acid, usually acetic acid.

Photographic Fixers

To make the image last long another solution called fix is used. Fixer dissolves unexposed silver halide crystals, making the image permanent.

The first ingredient in fixing solution is water, the next ingredient is sodium thiosulfate, acetic acid.

Hardener and Buffer

The next ingredient in the fixer is hardener which protects gelatin in the photographic solution. A common hardener is Potassium Alum. The hardener protects the emulsions, but a buffer protects the hardener. The buffer usually boric acid keeps fixing bath level at 4, protecting the hardener.

Colour Processing

Colour Processing is similar to black and white process the only difference is in the developing stage. A chemical paraphenylene diamine is used for developing film.


The last photographic processing solution is the wash which normally consists of only water solvent.
