Bicuculline

Bicuculline is a light-sensitive competitive antagonist of GABA_A receptors. It was originally identified in 1932 in plant alkaloid extracts and has been isolated from Dicentra cucullaria, Adlumia fungosa, Fumariaceae, and several Corydalis species.Bicuculline is also a pharmcological agent that, when used, increases the frequency of occurrence of ocular saccades during visual fixation.

It acts by preferentially binding to activated Na⁺ channels causing persistent activation that leads to increase nerve excitability. It is used in ointments for the treatment of neuralgia and rheumatoid pain.

Camptothecin

Camptothecin was isolated from the bark and stem of Camptotheca acuminata. Camptothecin and its derivatives are unique in their ability to inhibit DNA Topoisomerase I, by stabilizing a covalent reaction intermediate termed the cleavable complex which ultimately causes tumor cell death. Camptothecin demonstrated strong anticancer activity in preliminary clinical trials but also low solubility and adverse drug reaction. Camptothecin is believed to be a potent topoisomerase inhibitor that interferes with the essential function of topoisomerase in DNA replication. Camptothecin binds to the topoisomerase I and DNA complex (the covalent complex) resulting in a ternary complex, and thereby stabilizing it.

Rutin, also called rutoside, quercetin-3-rutinoside and sophorin, is a citrus flavon...oid glycoside found in the flower bud of Scphora japonica L. Rutin is also present in many other plants and sometimes referred to as Vitamin P, although not strictly a vitamin. Rutin inhibits platelet aggregation, as well as decreasing capillary permeability, making the blood thinner and improving circulation. Rutin has anti-inflammatory activity. Rutin inhibits aldose reductase activity. Aldose reductase is an enzyme normally present in the eye and elsewhere in the body. It helps change glucose into a sugar alcohol called sorbitol. Rutin also strengthens the capillaries, and, therefore, can reduce the symptoms of haemophilia.
