Calcitriol is a form of vitamin D.It is a substance that occurs naturally in the body, and is responsible for increasing levels of calcium in the blood. It is also a medication that is used to treat or prevent low calcium levels due to various diseases.Calcitriol increases levels of calcium in the blood in three different ways.Calcitriol also enhances reabsorption of calcium in the kidneys, and in concert with parathyroid hormone (PTH), stimulates the release of calcium from the bones.Calcitriol is also sometimes used to treat rickets,psoriasis,osteomalacia,and familial hypophosphatemia.The mechanism of action of Calcitriol in the treatment of psoriasis is accounted for by their antiproliferative activity for keratinocytes and their stimulation of epidermal cell differentiation. Calcitriol is also sometimes used to increase the amount of calcium in the blood of premature babies.Calcitriol is produced in the cells of the proximal tubule of the nephron in the kidneys by the action of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 1-alpha-hydroxylase.
