Nerve Growth Factor is a small secreted protein that is important for the growth, maintenance, and survival of certain target neurons. Nerve Growth Factor forms a cystine knot structure made up of beta strands twisted around each other and linked by disulfide bonds. It activates cellular signaling cascades through those receptor tyrosine kinase to regulate neuronal proliferation, differentiation and survival. It serve as a therapeutic agent in neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. Enzo Emanuele at the University of Pavia found that levels of a chemical messenger called nerve growth factor increased with romantic intensity. when people first fall in love, and Pietro Calissano has suggested that nerve growth factor may contribute to increased longevity and mental capacity. The results showed that the levels had reduced to as they were after one year.
