Polychlorinated biphenyls are a class of organic compounds with 2 to 10 chlorine atoms attached to biphenyl. The Polychlorinated Biphenyl family is composed of the 209 different arrangements and orientations possible, of which 130 are used commercially. Polychlorinated biphenyls were widely used as dielectric and coolant fluids, for example in transformers, capacitors, and electric motors.Polychlorinated biphenyls are formed by electrophilic chlorination of biphenyl with chlorine gas. It also used as plasticizers in paints and cements, stabilizing additives in flexible PVC coatings of electrical wiring and electronic components, pesticide extenders, cutting oils, reactive flame retardants, lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, and sealants, adhesives, wood floor finishes, paints, de-dusting agents, water-proofing compounds, casting agents, vacuum pump fluids, fixatives in microscopy, surgical implants, and in carbonless copy paper.
