Sulfapyridine is a sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfonamides inhibit multiplication of bacteria by acting as competitive inhibitors of p-aminobenzoic acid in the folic acid metabolism cycle. Sulfapyridine is a competitive inhibitor of the bacterial enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase.
