Magnesium sulfate
Properties
Magnesium sulfate (CAS No: 7487-88-9) is an inorganic salt with thechemical formula MgSO4. It is also known as English salt, Epsom salt, Bitter salt and Bath salt. It is a white crystalline solid with no odor. This inorganic salt is insoluble in acetone, whereas slightly soluble in glycerol and alcohol.
Production
The mineral kieserite (MgSO4.H2O) is the natural source for magnesium sulfate, which can be obtained through crystallization of the solution. Industrial process involves the centrifugation, drying and sieving. The inorganic salt can also be produced from magnesium oxide through thermal decomposition of magnesium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate, which are obtained from sea water and magnesite ore respectively. Magnesium sulfate crystals can be obtained through evaporation. However, they could be recrystallized to increase purity. Magnesium sulfate can be produced by treating magnesium oxide with dilute sulfuric acid.
Mg(OH)2→MgO + H2O
MgCO3→MgO + CO2
MgO+ H2SO4→MgSO4
Applications
- Pharmaceutical companies buy magnesium sulfate to manufacture various formulations.
- They are used in the treatment eclampsia, low blood magnesium and magnesium deficiency.
- The agricultural industries buy magnesium sulfate to increase the sulfur or magnesium content of the soil.
- Magnesium sulfate suppliers supply the chemical to agricultural field for magnesium deficient crops such as carrots, lemon trees, roses, potatoes, tomatoesand peppers.
- Beer manufacturers buy magnesium sulfate and use it as a brewing salt. Tofu manufacturers buy magnesium sulfate for use as a coagulant.
- Magnesium sulfate suppliers sell the chemical as a desiccant for organic synthesis, owing to its water affinity and compatibility with various organic compounds.
Handling and Storage
Dust generation and accumulation must be minimized. Routine housekeeping should be carried out to check dust accumulation. Magnesium sulfate must be used in well ventilated areas. Contact with skin, clothing and eyes should be avoided. Personal protection equipment such as googles, gloves, and respirators should be used by the factory personnel. It must be stored away from oxidizing agents in a properly sealed container. Magnesium sulfate containers must be properly sealed. Magnesium sulfate suppliers, manufacturers and industry users must carefully handle this inorganic salt.
Disposal
The chemical should not be disposed with household garbage. Chemical waste products should not reach open water or sewage system. The waste generator is responsible for the characterization of the waste as per the applicable regulatory authorities. Magnesium sulfate suppliers, manufacturers and distributors should consult federal and regulatory bodies for proper disposal of generated waste.
