Pentaerythritol was first synthesized by the German chemist Bernhard Tollens and his student P. Wigand. The chemical is prepared by the base-catalyzed poly-addition reaction involving the acetaldehyde and 3 equivalents of formaldehyde, following the Cannizzaro reaction with a fourth equivalent of formaldehyde to produce the final product.
