Sodium Dimethyldithiocarbamate
Sodium Dimethyldithiocarbamate (CAS no: 128-04-1) with chemical formula C5H10NS2Na is an organo sulphurous compound also known as dimethyldithiocarbamic acid, sodium salt or sodium dimethylaminocarbodithioate dimethyldithiocarbamic acid. It is in the form of white or off white crystalline powder.
Production Process
The method of producing a crystal of Sodium Dimethyldithiocarbamate includes the condensation of carbon disulphide, dimethylamine and sodium hydroxide in the surrounding of the toluene (solvent). This leads to subsequent crystallization and filtration. The dimethylamine is then added in the form of 42-44% aqueous solution to the reaction mixture cooled to 2-5%, that consists of toluene, carbon disulfide, and 40-45% sodium hydroxide aqueous solution. The resulting reaction mass is kept at 10-30° until the formation of the water-toluene suspension of sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate.
Before crystallization, water is distilled azeotropically at 75-90°C. Sodium Dimethyldithiocarbamate is attained in the form of crystalline scales. The resultant product is in the form of crystals not crumpled, non-caking, and well transported which can be stored for a long time without changing its properties.
Applications
