FRANKFURT, GERMANY: AkzoNobel selects ThyssenKrupp Uhde for chlor-alkali electrolysis technology. AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals has commissioned ThyssenKrupp Uhde to design and supply the energy-saving ThyssenKrupp Uhde membrane cells for the conversion of the mercury based electrolysis plant at the Industry Park Frankfurt-Hochst into state-of-the-art membrane electrolysis technology.
This extensive conversion project involves replacing the existing amalgam cells with ThyssenKrupp Uhde single-element membrane electrolysers. The new plant will increase annual production capacity in Frankfurt by around 50 per cent to 250,000 tonne of chlorine and 275,000 tonne of caustic lye. Commissioning is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2013.
“The electricity consumption per tonne of product will be improved by nearly 30 per cent. This is fully aligned with AkzoNobel’s Value and Values strategy and will boost our ambition to become the sustainability leader in the chlor-alkali industry,” said Martin Riswick, General Manager, Chlor-Alkali business, AkzoNobel.
