HOUSTON, US: BP Plc said it plans to cut staff, both hourly and salaried, at its Texas City, Texas, chemical plant as it will shut down an idle paraxylene production unit, which is used to make polyesters. The layoffs will include 24 hourly and 12 salaried employees, laying off 36 staff in all.
The “BP Texas City chemicals facility is permanently closing one paraxylene unit (PX-1) that has been idle for more than a year amid difficult market conditions,” said the company. “As a result of the PX-1 closure, BP will reorganize its Texas City Chemicals plant to better align and scale resources to meet our commitments and support our business goals, while maintaining safe, compliant and reliable operations.”
The company said it will continue to operate the site’s PX-2 and PX-3 p-xylene units, as well as a meta-xylene unit.
