Braskem and PetroPeru to build Petrochemical Plant in Peru

LIMA, PERU: Braskem and Petroleos del Peru said they will seek to build a $3 billion petrochemical plant on the Peruvian coast.

“The plant, which may start producing 1 million metric tons a year of polyethylene by 2017, would be the only petrochemical plant on Latin America’s Pacific Coast”, said Luis de Mendonca, vice president, Braskem. A letter of intent was signed to progress the project.

Braskem is the largest petrochemical operation in Latin America and among the three largest private companies in Brazil. It produces olefins like ethylene and propylene that are then used to make polyolefins such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and PVC. These are then used to make plastic materials and fibers. Braskem also manufactures aromatics such as benzene and intermediate chemicals like caprolactam used to make nylon.

Petróleos del Perú S.A. (Petroperú) is a Peruvian state-owned petroleum company. Its activities include transport, refinery and commercialization of fuel and other oil derivatives. Petroperú supplies products and services for automotive, marine, aviation, industrial and domestic use.
