Enhanced oil recovery is key driver for oilfield surfactants consumption

Advances in surfactant enhanced oil recovery techniques have resulted in significant reduction in the surfactant concentration needed for effective oil recovery. Manufacturers will continue to make R&D efforts to bring safer, low cost and improved oilfield surfactants.

The global oilfield surfactants industry is set to witness some remarkable developments over the next few years, with increasing number of oil & gas exploration projects worldwide. Recent advances in surfactant enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques have resulted in significant reduction in the surfactant concentration needed for effective oil recovery. Manufacturers will continue to make research and development efforts to bring safer, low cost and improved oilfield surfactants.

Surfactants are widely used in EOR applications, mainly in reservoirs with mild conditions. Surfactant flooding helps improve oil production by enhancing oil mobility and lowering interfacial tension, allowing better displacement of the oil by injected water. Additionally, surfactant EOR techniques help boost the wettability of porous rocks, displacing more oil by allowing water to flow through them faster.

Driven by the growing number of exploration & production (E&P) as well as shale oil production activities, the global oilfield surfactants market is projected to garner nearly US$1 billion in annual revenue by 2026.

3M Company, BASF SE, Solvay, Evonik Industries AG, Baker Hughes, Clariant AG, The Dow Chemical Company, Lubrizol Corporation, Sasol Limited, Stepan Company, Schlumberger Limited, Halliburton and Kao Corporation are some of the top players in the market. Recent developments in the global oil and gas industry have propelled the demand for oilfield chemicals significantly. Manufacturers across the globe are looking to expand their production capacities in order to meet the global demand.

In June 2018, Houston, Texas based oilfield services company SMG Industries Inc, had announced the opening of a new production facility in Alice, Texas. The new unit has been focusing on manufacturing oilfield products and services, including surfactants, detergents, and degreasers, to E&P companies, drilling rig operators and other oilfield related businesses.

In January last year, for instance, leading specialty chemicals manufacturer MFG Chemical had disclosed plans to boost its manufacturing capabilities of three of its Dalton, Georgia based plants that produce dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS). DOSS is a specialty surfactant utilized in oilfield, ethanol, lubricants, coatings, and agriculture, among numerous other applications.

Leading industry players are eying emerging markets such as Latin America, Asia Pacific and the Middle East & Africa to expand their global footprint.

During September 2020, BASF SE had completed the installation of five new EOR polymer injection plants in Argentina. The company’s high molecular weight polymer and polymer injection technologies had been selected to extend the life of one of the country’s major oilfields.

BASF combined standard high-performance polymers and oilfield surfactants into EOR formulations tailored to meet the specific field conditions. These systems, which are part of the surfactant flooding projects to help boost oil recovery rates, can reduce mechanical degradation of the polymer used.

Meanwhile in the Middle Eastern region, ADNOC had announced a $45 billion investment plan in March 2019 to expand the petrochemicals capacity at its Ruwais site from 4.5 million tpy in 2016 to almost 14.4 million tpy by the end of 2025. The state owned company had also announced plans to add new downstream product chains in oilfield chemicals including surfactants and detergents, among others.

In addition to the expansion of production capacities, mergers, acquisitions, and collaborations are among the other major strategies adopted by manufacturers. Los Angeles based private equity firm OpenGate Capital had acquired the North American amphoteric surfactant business from the Solvay Group last year.

Citing another instance, Sterling Auxiliaries Pvt Ltd along with its parent company Artek Surfin Chemicals Ltd. had acquired Baker Hughes’ Sand Springs, Oklahoma based specialty chemicals manufacturing facility to boost oilfield chemicals production.

In the near future, oilfield surfactant manufacturers are bound to witness lucrative opportunities, with steady rise in crude oil production across the world. Additionally, growing number of governments backed initiatives and investments for upcoming oil and gas exploration projects will positively impact the global oilfield surfactants industry outlook.
