WESSELING, GERMANY: LyondellBasell’s Wesseling site Germany has been hit by an explosion on 21 January 2012 at the polyethylene (PE) plants, injuring seven employees. The cause of the blast is now the subject of an investigation by the company and local authorities. Industry sources reported that the blast was at the low density polyethylene plant. LyondellBasell operates four PE plants in Wesseling comprising three high density and one low density PE units.

The site also hosts two crackers and two polypropylene plants with combined capacities of 1 million metric tonne per year and 460,000 metric tonne per year respectively. These are currently running normally. LyondellBasell said earlier this month it plans to permanently shut two polypropylene lines by mid-2012. The units, which have a combined capacity of 90,000 metric tonne per year, are among the company’s smallest and oldest production facilities, the company said in a statement, adding that the company had sufficient capacity to meet the needs of its customers in Europe from its larger scale facilities.
