KASARGOD, INDIA: Officials have spotted the remains of tanker ships off the coast of Berika beach, Kasargod, Kerala, India. The containers were found to produce a foul smelling gas which had caused a threat to the local residents. The gas was found to be Freon 22 (Chloro difluoro methane), which is a non- dangerous gas mostly used as a refrigerant. The area is under control, and the officials have confirmed no further threat. Six such tankers were found within 10 days.
According to a report by Indian news agency, Daijiworld, the containers spotted on the Kasargod sea shore belonged to the vessel ‘MOL Comfort’ that had sunk off the Salalah coast, Oman on 17 June 2013. The vessel, belonging to the Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) Company based in Tokyo, Japan submerged off the Oman coast, broke into pieces and caught fire. The containers and the fragments of the ship floated towards the coastal area from Karwar to Kasargod.
