Gelest to increase germane capacity in US

MORRISVILLE, US: Gelest Inc said it will increase germane (GeH4) capacity at its Morrisville plant in the US, to meet the rise in global demand by the semiconductor industry. The company will expand the capacity by more than 500 percent, expected to be fully operational by the third quarter.

Gelest sees increase in demand for germane as a result of continued growth of mobile devices (heterojunction bipolar transistors) and high speed logic (strained silicon), along with expected modest growth in high performance photovoltaics (tandem junction). There is significant growing interest in current and proposed technologies associated with epitaxy, CVD, ALD and GLAD processes, it said.

Gelest recently received a process patent approval in the US and other parts of the world, “Method for Producing High Purity Germane by a Continuous or Semi-Continuous Process.” The process enables more efficient and cost-effective germane manufacture to reduce the overall production cost by as much as 20 to 25 percent. In addition to boosting production capacity in its US facility, Gelest is engaged in discussions with licensing partners to embark on the installation of multiple germane production plants throughout Asia.
