Editorial of Chemical Today magazine, October 2018.

With a growing population, nowadays farming and food consumption is becoming a major area of focus. Along with the grain and pulses requirement, health or organic quotient of the food is also gaining prime importance. Over the years, with continuous and regular crop plantation, farmers have forgotten the nutrition requirements of the soil. Further, the preference for growing specific produce such as ‘cash rich’ or ‘export oriented’ crops has also added to the woes. Not only the farmers but also the Government policies have not been supportive for a long haul. Against this backdrop, the agricultural community and various stakeholders are demanding better solutions for soil nutrition. The soil when replenished will work towards better and healthy food for the citizens. This is not a policy need but a need for well-nourished, healthy youth in the country. Have a look at our sector view as we review - how Agrochemicals will play a role in the agriculture industry and soil nutrition.

In addition to Agrochemicals we explore the trends in the Pulp & Paper industry this month. Considering the packaging industry, reduced use of plastics is fueling growth of the paper solutions. Here the packaging industry is one segment that we cannot ignore. In recent times, the packaging industry, backed by growth of the online shopping (e-commerce) segment, has turned out to be the major user of paper. With the growing awareness regarding paper usage and concerns related to depleting forest cover, the packaging industry too is researching sustainable and recyclable solutions.

Some of the leading chemical companies are already introducing innovative solutions for the packaging industry. These solutions are focused on improving performance and sustainability for end users - in all aspects including the manufacturing process and in the end product.

On a different note, industrial internet of things (IIOT), digitalization and automation has become part of the each and every segment within the chemical industry. Looking at some of the forefront uses, for this month we detail-out how it improves operations for the mining industry, enhances management in the oil & gas industry and provides benefits to the control valves segment.
