KOCHI, INDIA: Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) is setting up a polyol/ propylene glycol/ mono-ethylene glycol petrochemical complex at the Kochi Refinery. This is located at Ambalamugal, Kerala in Southern India.

The expansion is part of the state-owned company’s propylene derivatives petrochemical project under a Make-in-India initiative. Mechanical completion is expected during the first half of 2019.

Petrochemical company BPCL has bought 170 acres (67 ha) of land adjacent to the refinery complex in Kochi. It plans to make polyols on the site, according to an environmental filing.

The plant will have the capacity to produce 250 kt/year polyols, 100 kt/year propylene glycol and 140 kt/year mono-ethylene glycol. Over the next five years, Bharat said that Indian polyol consumption is expected to grow at 11 percent CAGR.

Polyols are made from propylene oxide. Until the PO plant in the upstream project comes on stream, there is limited supply of the material in India. This restricts the production of polyols in the country.

In 2017, Manali was linked with the expansion of Bharat’s site in Kochin, also known as Cochin. We first reported on the possibility that Bharat would expand capacity for propylene derived chemicals in 2014.
