The demand for industrial floor coatings systems has been rising steadily across the globe as more and more facility managers look to implement reliable systems that deliver the optimum protection for their operating environments.
A key vertical within the polymers and advanced materials space, the global industrial floor coatings industry has witnessed some interesting trends in recent years. Floor coating solutions play one of the most important roles in an industrial facility. They enable the floors to withstand constant traffic and mechanical wear along with other factors such as heavy impacts, extreme temperatures, and corrosive substances.
The demand for coating systems has been rising steadily across the globe as more and more facility managers look to implement reliable systems that deliver the optimum protection for their operating environments. In terms of annual revenue, the global industrial floor coatings market size is set to reach $7.01 billion by 2026, with a positive application outlook in myriad industry verticals.
Constant product innovations to bolster the industry outlook
Over the past several years, industrial floor coating solutions have been experiencing a significant demand across manufacturing and warehousing sectors. To meet this demand, a large number of producers are focusing on designing solutions to suit specific conditions of a particular industrial environment. Leading market players may aim to develop novel systems that offer high resistance against abrasion, wear and chemicals, and can handle large equipment, heavy traffic, and harsh environments.
In June 2020, Sika had introduced a new range of next generation floor coatings with enhanced performance suitable for industrial applications where safety and durability are of paramount importance. The new product line includes the Sikafloor-2640, a two-part epoxy floor coating designed for easy application, reliable performance, and high wear resistance.
The Sikafloor-2640, with its excellent blush resistance, can deliver a smooth seamless high gloss finish or a number of slip resistance profiles for applications. These include manufacturing, warehousing and food production facilities that require high mechanical and chemical resistance.
Citing another instance, in September last year, PPG Industries had launched a line of floor coatings specifically designed for general purpose, outdoor work, high traffic, and chemical environments. The new comprehensive line of coating systems includes base coats, prime coats and top coats tailored to deliver optimum performance based on the required working environment.
The company also disclosed that the customers would be provided with additional customization options to better meet the specific requirements of their working environment. Many industrial floor coating manufacturers are also incorporating advanced technologies to develop novel coating products.
In April 2020, for example, flooring solutions provider Bona had unveiled the Excimer technology for industrial coatings. The new innovative technologies offers rapid double curing for prefinished flooring. It imparts an enhanced scratch and chemical resistance to the floor, providing a smoother and more matte finished surface.
Regulatory bodies worldwide have launched strict worker safety norms which should boost the implementation of advanced floor coating systems among facility managers. In the US, for instance, the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had introduced the Code of Federal Regulations section 1910.22 which requires facility owners to keep flooring surfaces safe or risk heavy fines.

Some key challenges and the future of industrial floor coatings
High prices of some industrial floor coating products may limit their application to some extent in the future. besides, fluctuating raw material prices and difficulty in the availability of these materials due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has been a major concern for the market players.
Resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic in several countries is likely to be a key hurdle for manufacturers as well as suppliers in the near future. However, increased construction spending in many of the developing countries is likely to provide the regional players with promising opportunities.
Currently, BASF SE, PPG Industries, Dow Chemicals, Sherwin Williams, Kansai Paints Asian Paints, AkzoNobel, The Lubrizol Corporation, RPM International Inc, Roto Polymers & Chemicals, Sika AG, Nora Systems, CPC Floor Coatings and Tambour are among the major producers of industrial floor coatings. The coming years may witness the emergence of numerous small and medium scale suppliers to meet a probable rise in demand.
