JSR, Bangkok Synthetics joint venture to start SSBR plant in Thailand

TOKYO, JAPAN: JSR Corporation and Bangkok Synthetics Co Ltd have recently agreed to establish a joint venture and construct a manufacturing plant for solution polymerization styrene-butadiene rubber (SSBR) in Thailand. The new company called JSR BST Elastomer Co Ltd will be incorporated with JSR at 51 per cent and 49 per cent held by BST by end of June. The new manufacturing plant for SSBR will have a capacity of 50,000 ton per year with the ability to expand to 100,000 ton per year. The plant based in Map ta Phut Industrial Estate, Rayong, Thailand, is scheduled to start operation in June 2013.

Due to recent rise in environmental concerns as well as labeling regulations of fuel-efficient tires, global demands of SSBR have continued to increase. Demands in Asia have increased because of domestic needs and exports, especially for European markets. Currently, JSR is in progress of increasing its capacity by 25,000 ton to reach 60,000 ton in total in November 2011 at the Yokkaichi Plant.

Also, JSR has manufacturing capacity of 30,000 ton/year of SSBR based on the capacity right agreement with Styron Europe, GmbH (formally known as Dow Europe). By adding significantly large manufacturing capability in Thailand that is the heart land of tire manufacturing in Asia, JSR will be able to supply high performance SSBR to meet the strong demand from the tire industry.
