JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA: South Africa will set up a $211 million joint venture with Lonza Group to manufacture the main chemicals used in HIV drugs, as part of a government plan to reduce the cost. South Africa is the biggest import of antiretroviral (ARV) medicines in the world, with an estimated 1.3 million people receiving treatment for HIV at present and more than 5 million infected with the virus. It is believed that in 2009, an estimated 310,000 South Africans died of AIDS.

The venture will be built in Gauteng province and estimated to create additional 2,200 jobs in the sector; an additional 3,800 jobs will be created during the construction phase. “This joint venture will establish the first pharmaceutical plant to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients for anti-retroviral medicines in South Africa,” said Naledi Pandor, Science and Technology Minister, South Africa.
