National Chemistry Week emphasizes importance of chemistry

SAN DIEGO, US: National Chemistry Week (NCW) is an annual event held in the US to raise public awareness of the importance of chemistry in everyday life. It is coordinated by the American Chemical Society (ACS). National Chemistry Week is a community based programme that unites ACS local sections, businesses, schools, and individuals in communicating the importance of chemistry to our quality of life, to promote the value of chemistry in everyday life. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the NCW programme.

National Chemistry Week is from October 21-27, 2012. The goal of National Chemistry Week is to foster an interest and appreciation for chemistry at the local level. The National Chemistry Week theme is “Nanotechnology - The smallest BIG idea in science!”

As a part of Chemistry Week, Brigham Young University (BYU) chemistry majors are making and serving nitrogen ice cream for $1 a cup every day. Erin Stansel, a chemistry major from San Diego is one of those involved in National Chemistry Week. Chemical magic shows, hosted by BYU’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, were also held every day. There will also be a poster session that presents the research currently being done by BYU chemistry students and members of ACS. National Chemistry Week will conclude with a hands-on chemistry workshop for kids of all ages.

Augustana College’s Chemistry Club celebrated National Chemistry Week by hosting an event titled “A Night of Explosions, Colour Changes and Toothpaste?” Augustana chemistry students, along with members of the faculty, will perform demonstrations using their knowledge of chemistry. The Augustana Chapter of the American Chemical Society seeks to provide students with a chance to participate in fun and educational activities that promote an interest in chemistry. The organization gives students and faculty an opportunity to work and learn together in a relaxed environment.

Ohio Northern University will celebrate National Chemistry Week beginning by a Chemistry Demos Extravaganza. During the event the two groups will be doing multiple demonstrations with pressure, including shooting the caps off of water bottles and crushing pop cans and multiple demonstrations related to colour, including luminol and a rainbow tube. There will also be demonstrations that involve flames, including lighting a dollar bill on fire without burning it as well as doing multiple demonstrations with liquid nitrogen, including smashing a small pumpkin.

Scientists and engineers from the BASF plant in Palmyra, US, visited Baldwin Intermediate School to give eager students a hands-on science lesson as part of National Chemistry Week.
