Shaw to provide engineering services for Holtec’s small modular reactor

BATON ROUGE, US: The Shaw Group Inc has been awarded a contract by SMR, LLC, a subsidiary of Holtec International, to provide phase one engineering support services for a new 140-megawatt small modular nuclear power reactor, the Holtec inherently safe modular underground reactor (HI-SMUR). The undisclosed value of the contract will be included in Shaw’s power segment’s backlog of unfilled orders in the third quarter of fiscal year 2011.

Shaw will develop the conceptual design of the balance of plant and support systems to advance the HI-SMUR toward eventual commercial application. Shaw also will prepare an overall design basis, support licensing activities and evaluate plant layouts and optimization of plant output.

“As the demand for clean, safe commercial nuclear energy continues to grow, Shaw is poised to serve this dynamic industry. In addition, Shaw’s capability to fabricate power plant modules will be especially important to the implementation program for small module reactors,” said J M Bernhard Jr, Chairman, President and CEO, Shaw.
