Thomas Swan plans massive investment in Durham, UK

DURHAM, UNITED KINGDOM: Thomas Swan & Co Ltd announced a major programme to increase custom manufacturing capacity for its site in Consett, County Durham. The plant will be commissioned in spring 2012 following a multi-million pound investment in flexible equipment including two new 6 m3 glass reactors and a 10 m3 stainless steel unit with dedicated ancillaries. The new facility will also be linked to three 2 m3 glass lined reactors, a 2 m3 glass lined distillation unit, a 2 m3 Hastelloy turbo dryer and a halar centrifuge.

“We have a reputation for responding quickly and efficiently to complex chemical challenges and as the custom manufacturing business continues to grow, we will require additional capacity to meet anticipated demand,” said Russell Clarke, Custom Manufacturing Business Manager, Thomas Swan.

The new equipment will facilitate a wide range of chemical technologies including the ability to isolate solids from flammable or corrosive solvents for a variety of applications including speciality chemical intermediates.

Thomas Swan is planning for further growth in this sector as many smaller competitors have been unable to invest in the quality and environmental systems needed to meet modern chemical manufacturing requirements.
