Toray to buy prepreg maker in Italy; expands carbon fibre business

TOKYO, JAPAN: Toray Industries Inc said that it has decided to acquire 55 percent outstanding shares of Tuscany, Italy-headquartered, prepreg manufacturer Delta Tech SpA, making Delta Tech and its wholly owned subsidiary Delta Preg SpA into its subsidiaries. Financial details were not disclosed.

Delta Group is engaged in the development and supply of high-quality prepreg, primarily for premium automobile applications. It has been highly rated by the market for its wide range of products and services, and diligent technical services, Toray said.

So far, Toray has been enhancing a cooperative relationship with the Delta Group through supply of carbon fibre Torayca. In coming years, Toray will accelerate product development in Europe by leveraging its high-grade, high performance prepreg technologies.

With Composite Materials (Italy) srl (CIT) and Delta Group under its umbrella at the same time, and expanding products, enables Toray to respond broadly to the market requirements that are getting more sophisticated, especially to conquer new frontiers in the carbon fibre composites industry.

It also enhances Toray’s structure to offer solutions to customers at each level of its own integrated supply chain by combining Toray Carbon Fibres Europe SA (CFE), a French subsidiary which produces carbon fibre from precursor and distributes it, as well as Euro Advanced Carbon Fibre Composites GmbH (EACC) and ACE Advanced Composite Engineering GmbH (ACE), German subsidiaries that produce and distribute carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts, it said.

Toray positions the carbon fibre composite materials business as one of the strategically expanding businesses and is pursuing business expansion through active investment of management resources. Going forward, it will continue to drive forward further business expansion through sophistication of the business by enhancing its supply chain in each region of America, Europe and Asia.
