BANGALORE, INDIA: Milk adulteration has become a major area of concern in Karnataka, India. According to Food Safety and Standard Act, toned milk should contain 4.5 fat and 8.5 solid non-food (SNF) where as normal milk should contain 3 fat and 8.5 SNF. Lesser fat and SNF makes the milk thin.
Various ingredients are added to milk to make it thick. Some of the substances added to thicken milk are sweet potato powder, urea, carboxy methyl cellulose, rice flour etc. Traces of gun powder are found in some parts of Indian state Maharastra. Another type of milk called “synthetic milk” has been found in parts of Andra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Synthetic milk are not milk in true sense, it’s a mixture of chemicals – caustic soda, urea, soaps and bleaching powder mixed in proper proportion and boiled to get the colour and consistency of milk. Synthetic milk has harmful effects on kidney and liver. Continued consumptions can causes various health issues and can be even fatal.
The adultered milk looks so similar to the real milk that it becomes difficult to distinguish between them.
