In an interview, Rajendra Mainkar, Business Development Manager-West, WAGNER Industrial Solutions, with Shivani Mody from WOC TV, talks about the coating industry’s challenges, trends and opportunities.

Trends in the surface & coating industry.

Wagner is a German company - more than 50-years-old. We started our Indian operations since 2007. Our activities are basically into powder and liquid coatings – including, right from handle guns, upto booths and recovery, as far as the powder coating is concerned. That is our main product and all over India, we have sold more than 200 plants so far.

Regarding powder coatings, the main challenge is fast recovery and transfer efficiency. Nowadays the majority of the products use multiple colours, hence our products need to be good enough to cater to those varying requirements.

The latest trend in the market as far as the powder coatings are concerned is a plastic booth with monocyclone and in that powder coating booth, you can change colour from black to white within 5 minutes. And as far as the auto industries are concerned, people are switching from liquid to powder. Therein lies the challenge, as powder coatings should be capable of handling the job similar to the liquid coatings. We are getting a good response from the Indian market, as the market in India is growing.

We come from Pune, which is an auto hub and all the auto giants as well as Tier 1, Tier 2 vendors are present there. The enquiries are good and we can safely say the future is bright.

Other than the Auto industry which sectors have opportunity in India for the surface & coating segment.

Actually, wherever there is paint - there is our application, so you can say white goods like fridge, TV, wood industry, heavy structures where protective coatings are required. We have liquid applications, just name a field wherever painting is required, we have applications, either powder or liquid. Also the opportunity and potential are quite high in India.
