Students may focus on geological science, environmental geosciences, solid earth geophysics, geochemistry, geobiology, atmospheric and ocean science, and planetary science. Concentrators may work with faculty and graduate students on major research projects as a research or field assistant, in the context of course work, or as part of an undergraduate research project. Class sizes are small and student-professor contact is frequent and informal. The EPS Department features a world-class faculty, state-of-the art laboratories, instrumentation and facilities, and a friendly, collaborative culture that is committed to the education and training of its graduate students. Graduate students enter with diverse undergraduate preparation, with majors in Earth Sciences as well as Applied Math, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering and Physics. Graduate study and research within EPS are equally diverse, and include geology, geobiology, geochemistry, geophysics, physics and chemistry of climate, planetary science, tectonics, and more. The Chemical and Physical Biology (CPB) concentration provides students with a broad foundation in the physical and life sciences. This concentration is designed for students interested in applying quantitative tools, physical concepts, and chemical principles to the study of biology.
