The Chemistry Department is on the Approved List of the American Chemical Society (ACS), a distinction earned by fewer than half of the nation’s chemistry departments. Courses are taught by dedicated professors who hold PhDs in a specific area of chemistry specialization and are highly active in independent research projects, although their primary interest and responsibility is offering excellent classroom instruction, overseeing student research and assisting students outside of the class room. Students have outstanding research opportunities - including immersive faculty-mentored research projects; access to well-equipped state-of-the-art laboratories, extensive scientific instrumentation, computer facilities and a rich chemistry library; and forums to present their results at regional and/or national professional conferences. Graduates are poised to excel in graduate school and in fascinating career areas such as medical discoveries in the health technologies, computer technology, clothing and textiles, foods and nutrition research, industrial research and materials sciences.
