The Department of Chemistry is one of the departments started right from the incption of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (formerly known as Karnataka Regional Engineering College in the year 1960. It has well-established laboratories equipped with sophisticated instruments, which fulfill the needs of UG/PG and PhD. Students. Now, the Department is offering several research projects to UG/PG students of other major departments, as a joint program to activate interdisciplinary research activities. Based on the facilities available, the Department had been recognized as a Ph.D research center by Mysore and Mangalore Universities about a decade back. The Department is also a QIP Ph.D study center for chemistry. The Department of Chemical Engineering at National Institute of Technology Karnataka is one of the oldest in this leading Engineering Institute. It was started in the year 1965 with the assistance of UNESCO, MHRD Government of India and the Government of Karnataka and ranked one of the top Chemical Engineering departments in India by National Board of Accreditation. The Department owes a lot to the vision of its founder Head of Department Prof. M.G.Subba Rau.
