NJIT was founded in 1881 as the Newark Technical School. The first of NJIT's current colleges was established in 1930, when the school’s name was changed to the Newark College of Engineering. The first bachelor’s degrees were awarded in 1923: three in chemical engineering, three in electrical engineering, and four in mechanical engineering. NJIT offers 92 undergraduate and graduate degree program in six specialized schools instructed by expert faculty, 98 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their field. NJIT prepares its graduates for positions of leadership as professionals and as citizens. The Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science provides a unique focus for addressing some of today's most pressing environmental and chemical problems.
