Rajarata University of Sri Lanka was established in 1996. The Rajarata University of Sri Lanka is an emerging university which was joined to the national university system. The Faculty of Applied Sciences consists of 2 departments; Physical Sciences and Biological Sciences. The departments offer B.Sc degree courses in chemistry. Research conducted in the Physical Sciences department are Synthetic organic chemistry , Water chemistry and Natural Products chemistry. The department of biochemistry was established in 2006. The department has two laboratories,a student laboratory and a research laboratory. The department conducts a Biochemistry undergraduate programme for medical students and post graduate research leading to MPhil degrees.
