Siddaganga Institute of Technology, Tumkur popularly known as SIT established in the year 1963, is one among 132 institutions run by Sree Siddaganga Education Society.SIT campus is spread over 50 acres and the whole area is landscaped and is lush green. All the departments in the institute have well equipped laboratories.The institute has over 1900 computers and are located in 29 Computer Centres which are all networked with fibre optic backbone. The Department of Chemical Engineering was started in 1974 with a mission of imparting technical knowledge and skills to the students to become technically sound, practical, self-sufficient Chemical Engineers. The postgraduate programme was started in 1992 with an intake of 10 students. The Bangalore University and Visveswaraiah Technological University, Belgaum have recognized this department as a centre for doing research work leading to Ph.D. degree.The Department offers courses in chemistry to students of engineering disciplines at I to IV semester levels, both in theory and practical. It also provides supporting guidance to students of Chemical Engineering in their project work. It also offers Ph.D programme in chemistry of VTU.
