The University of Santiago was founded in 1849. It is the oldest public universities in Chile. The institution has three important historical moments: his birth as the School of Arts and Crafts (1849); their redefinitions State Technical University (1952) and University of Santiago de Chile (1981). In the last two stages, has been directed for 12 bodies, among them Santiago Labarca (1957-1959) and Henry Kirberg (1968-1973). The University of Santiago is one of the five universities in the country in scientific productivity. The university has more than 19 thousand 900 students for the undergraduate program and 37 programs , 14 Master's and Doctoral programs attended by 800 thousand students.
