Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur is one of the first six Regional Engineering Colleges established under the scheme sponsored by Government of India. The college was established in June 1960 as a part of national integration initiative through joint venture of Govt. of India and Govt. of Maharashtra and named after the eminent engineer, planner and statesman of the country Sir M. Visvesvaraya. The mission of VNIT is to achieve high standards of excellence in generating and propagating knowledge in engineering and allied disciplines. VNIT is committed to providing an education that combines rigorous academics with joy of discovery. The Institute encourages its community to engage in a dialogue with society to be able to effectively contribute for the betterment of humankind. The department of chemistry was established in the college with an aim to impart quality technical education particularly in the branch of engineering chemistry with emphasis on chemical characterization of engineering materials. These goals are being achieved through constant effective teaching and simultaneously imparting practical training to the engineering students at the 1st year level. The department is recognized as an important R&D centre and also as a centre for Ph.D. programme of Nagpur University. Since the inception of the deptt., more than 30 research scholars have Ph.D. degrees from Nagpur University.
